When you are reading this, I’m winging my way across to the other side of the world. Every time I have to fly off somewhere, I have to prepare all the posts in advance. I know I’m taking a chance because sometimes something unexpected happens, so I won’t be able to report it here.

With Jo Hyun-Jae, the reassuring thing is: nothing much ever happens. Someone once told me: “Yours is a one-actor blog. It is a tall order to maintain one post a day.” That was when JHJ was still in the army. Still, I managed. After all the frenzy of his discharge, peace and quiet again. Japan fan meetings – Wow! – after everything has been milked, what’s left?

Everybody is waiting for the announcement of JHJ’s first drama in more than two years, but so far nothing is forthcoming. The ongoing strike of the Korea Artist Union for Broadcasting, Film and Performances may have something to do with the delay. (Please see our September 3 post “Strike” under Category: Miscellaneous.)

It is unsettling to read complaints on certain Korean websites. (But why would true JHJ fans apply pressure on him?) “Like a second enlistment”, “Come out soon”, “Who is JHJ? What is JHJ?” “We have to carry on waiting unconditionally…..?” And they throw JHJ’s own words back at him — “I will see you all soon in a new work – please be patient.” “You have shown so much confidence in waiting for me – I will work hard.” And comments like: “Only fan meetings overseas!”

Ah! so that’s the crux of the problem! Everybody, including the Koreans, is jealous of the Japanese. Those fans from the land of 1.3 billion have been clamouring for JHJ to go to their country. I have never worked a day in the business world, but even I (who often have my head in the clouds, according to my dear hubby) understand about supply and demand. In the 2008 Japan fan meetings in Osaka, Tokyo, and Nagoya, more than 4,000 Japanese fans attended, compared to the Korea fan meeting with only 500 (half of which were Japanese.)

The 2010 Japan fan meeting in Osaka and Tokyo were again sell-outs, with 4,000 Japanese fans who paid about US$130 for each ticket. Can any other country guarantee the same reception for JHJ? Behind JHJ’s other-worldly looks is a business after all. There is a management office to run. There is a family to support. Don’t forget he has been in the army two years on less than US$100 a month. He would love to work. Can you offer him work?

I have always admired the Japanese for their dedication and loyalty. Someone tells me the average Korean fan has a change of heart every few months. You can’t blame them since there are so many attractive new artists emerging all the time. There may not be numerous JHJ fans in Korea, but there is a core group that has always been there for him.

Every time I meet Japanese fans at fan meetings or other functions, I love receiving their name cards (all so colourfully designed with their favourite JHJ photo) and their little gifts (all kinds of fancy things like mini-fan, miniature JHJ, goodluck charm, tiny stuffed toy, folded designs, green teabag, mint, etc.) This time my favourites are two — chewing gum and wafer.

First, the wafer. This Japanese fan had it specially made for JHJ’s discharge – that’s what it says on the box : “Jo Hyun Jae – Congratulations on the discharge from army” - with JHJ’s photo in a heart of roses and tied with a beautiful blue ribbon. When I was going over my JHJ collectibles, I saw this little box, at the back of which says contents are wafers from a very well-known (hence expensive) bakery. Expiry date is this month, so I thought: “Why waste good stuff? I can always keep the box.” I opened the box and found three thin pieces of wafers, individually wrapped. I opened a heart-shaped one and saw some Japanese writing on it. It tasted delicious. I opened another and found more Japanese writing on this round-shaped one with a design. It also tasted delicious. I opened the last one and suddenly found JHJ staring up at me! Under his image are the words: “JHJ – Congratulations!” OMG! I’ve eaten two JHJs! The wafers are custom-made! How did this Japanese fan get this famous bakery to custom-make wafers for JHJ’s discharge? Never mind the cost, but how did she manage?

Then I got to the Lotte chewing gum. This time I approached it with trepidation and respect. Nothing out of the ordinary on the box, but, sure enough, when I opened it, I found each and every one of the gum had JHJ’s photo and name on them! So of course they went back into the Lotte box and into my treasure chest of JHJ collectibles. My hat goes off to these Japanese fans for their resourcefulness and willingness to expend themselves on JHJ’s behalf.

If you can do better, you have the right to invite JHJ to your country. It is easy to talk about loving JHJ, but how much are you prepared to do for him? Of course we can’t all be as rich as the Japanese, and there are ways of expressing our love other than in monetary terms, but until you can best them, don’t be jealous of the Japanese. Let us each do what we can for JHJ.

We’ve been keeping an eye on the current critical situation in the Korean entertainment industry.

(The following contains extracts from the Korea Herald, the Korea Times, and korea.sohu.com.)

August 30, 2010

Korea Artist Union for Broadcasting, Film and Performances will “refuse to work” for 13 television dramas that are currently airing, unless the three major broadcasters ― KBS, MBC and SBS ― settle an outstanding balance of over 4 billion won from the last two years.

Moon Je-kap, a union official, said on Sunday, August 29, that more than 400 actors and actresses, as well as numerous other union workers like make-up artists and sound engineers, who have been working for TV shows that are produced by outside companies for major public broadcast corporations have not been paid their wages since 2008, totalling an estimated 4,368 million won.

The boycott decision was made on August 27 in an emergency meeting of board of representatives. The body will hold a press conference on September 1 to release all schedules they are firmly rejecting to participate.

Dramas likely to be affected are KBS2’s popular “Baker King, Kim Tak-gu,” SBS’s ‘”Giant,” “I am Legend,” and MBC’s “Gloria,” and “Kim Su-ro. ”

September 1

Members of Korea Artist Union for Broadcasting, Film and Performances are refusing to work for 10 MBC and SBS drama shows effective immediately, as the two major broadcasters failed to settle an outstanding balance of over 3 billion won from the last two years, a union representative said at a press conference on Wednesday, September 1.

According to Korea Communications Commission, the three broadcasters — KBS, MBC, and SBS — together recorded a net profit of 167.7 billion won in 2009.

KBS, the biggest of the three major Korean television networks that owed the union members over 1 billion won, agreed to pay the balance just three minutes before the press conference. The unionized actors and actresses will continue working for the four currently-airing KBS shows, including its hit drama series “Baker king, Kim Tak-gu.”

September 2

SBS is willing to seek a compromise settlement. They have agreed to the terms set by the union and promised to pay all back wages within a certain time. They have also guaranteed there will not be any relapse of the situation in the future.

As are result, SBS dramas like “My girlfiend is a nine-tailed fox”, ”Giant”, and “I am Legend” can continue to broadcast.

September 3

MBC is still standing firm. They even accuse the union of disrupting the entertainment industry and have absolutely refused to compromise.

As of today, workers have walked off the sets of “Dong Yi” and “Gloria”, so these two dramas have stopped production with immediate effect. If no agreement is in sight soon, other MBC dramas like “Naughty Kiss” and “Kim Su-ro” will follow the same fate.

UPDATE
September 6

The Union announces at noon that the production company for “Dong Yi” has agreed to immediately pay actors’ overdue salary as well as pre-pay their salary to prevent a repeat of salary arrears. So the strike that started on September 3 has ended for “Dong Yi”.

But the Union stresses that resumption of work on “Dong Yi” does not mean they have come to an understanding with MBC which has from the beginning steadfastly refused to negotiate. So workers on other MBC dramas will continue their strike.

Our concern

Why does this have to happen just as our Jo Hyun-Jae is making his comeback? How will this affect his first drama after his discharge? Perhaps it is just as well that his comeback work has not been announced. We hope he doesn’t sign with MBC. He may not even get paid if that’s the way they do business.

We think it is a good thing that this finally comes out in the open. The Korean entertainment industry, like so many other sectors, is cloaked in secrecy and obscurity. Many things are kept under wraps and are never openly discussed. We admire the union workers for their fortitude and we salute their courage in taking on the Big 3.

Just make sure our JHJ is not affected, OK?

Many thanks, everybody, for your good wishes! I’ve been ill for the last few days, but I was also registering a silent protest! But nothing can keep me away from JHJ for long!

Don’t know how or when or where ojik manages to take this photo, but I take my hat off to her. Hairstyle would say Tokyo fan meeting.

The fish bone is still stuck in my throat, and I can’t get it out. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, just treat the following as the ravings of a delusional mind.

This is a watered-down version (4th version) of something I started to write on August 27, the day I was returning home after a non-event. I was checking in at the airline counter when my cell phone rang – it was an URGENT request to delete certain posts on this blog. I was shocked! I never buckle under pressure. But the request came from someone I respect, and the rationale given was some people might use this to harm JHJ. What could I do except rush to find the nearest computer (in the lounge) which someone was using (away at men’s room.) I pleaded with his friend sitting at the next station: “Please, I have to use the computer for two minutes — it’s a matter of life and death!” I deleted the posts, but a part of me died there and then. I didn’t even realize I had tears in my eyes (tears of disappointment? sadness? frustration? exasperation? exhaustion?……)

There are certain principles that I hold very dear, among which are FREEDOM OF SPEECH and FREEDOM OF THE PRESS. People who live in democratic countries will understand this. When something happens, and you’re not allowed to report it, or even give your take on the matter, it strikes me as wrong.

Being western-educated, I am used to tackling things head-on. When something goes wrong, you deal with it. Taking evasive action or pretending it never happened does not solve the problem. You can induce collective amnesia in people under your control, but if others really want to find out, they will. Something once out in the open cannot be put under wraps again, especially in this internet age.

I remember a game I used to play with my son when he was small — “Close your eyes”. When he encounters anything scary, I tell him to close his eyes. He can’t see the monster (or whatever) anymore, so he thinks it’s no longer there. But we are long past the age of being children.

I feel we are being told to close our eyes, or rather we’re blindfolded, so we can’t see. Does that mean then it never happened? Isn’t this like an ostrich burying its head in the sand? You can’t see your enemies, so you think they are no longer there. But they can see you!

This incident makes me realize the vast cultural differences between the Koreans and us. Even though I have watched so many Korean dramas and movies and been to Korea so many times, I do not understand them at all in this respect.

Of course I have to respect their way of handling things. After all, they know best how to go about it, and they have their artist’s best interests at heart. But they need a few basic lessons in Crisis Management. And to censor overseas fan sites smacks of totalitarianism. Do they have any respect for us at all?

Is this the way to handle an international incident? Do they realize Mr. Jo is not just a Korean actor but an international star? that he has fans not just in Korea and Japan but all over the world? that we have waited for him as long as the Koreans and Japanese? that we are as loyal and devoted at the Koreans and Japanese?

Do they know they risk alienating fans? Or don’t foreign fans (apart from the Japanese) count in their book? Do they even realize how popular JHJ is in Thailand, Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, even Australia, Canada, U.S.A., England, Portugal, not to mention the Greater China area? Do they care at all?

This incident has made me realize how different cultures could react so differently to the same situation. Perhaps it’s the difference between western and oriental education, or the status of women in our respective societies, or simply different perspectives, different philosophies of life.

Whatever, I find it disheartening that our reaction to the same incident should be such a continental divide, given the common denominator of our love for JHJ.

Why is the world of JHJ so full of complications, mediocrity, and intrigue when JHJ himself is so pure, serene, innocent, simple, true of heart?

Whatever happens, we still love and support JHJ who is above the fray. We will always be here for him. Fighting!

P.S. The other day my investment advisor called and recommended a bond which paid pretty good interest. I was interested but as soon as I heard the issuer PCCW, I said: “NO! Don’t buy it!” She said: “But this is a good investment – your money in the bank is hardly paying any interest.” I said: “I don’t care! I’m not investing in PCCW or any of its subsidiaries!” And I’m going to change my cell phone carrier from PCCW to its competitor. If I have a subscription to NOW TV, I’d cancel that too!

This Dear Diary (19) is posted on August 19, the day I embark on my journey to the JHJ Japan Fan Meetings. We’re flying to Osaka where we’ll be staying at the Hotel New Otani (where the fan meeting is to be held on August 21.) Tomorrow we’ll go to Kansai International Airport to meet JHJ on his arrival.

This is going to be a repeat of our 2008 trip, so been there, done that. But we’re still so excited! We’re determined to just enjoy our experience this time. No photo or video taking (can’t beat the professionals – in quality and speed.) Just soaking in the atmosphere and letting ourselves drown in JHJ’s magic.

Above was the poster that caught my eye and took my breath away as soon as I entered the lobby of the hall in 2008. I’m looking forward to more such gorgeous photos of a now more matured, more manly JHJ. I can take photos of still objects, but a moving, breathing JHJ is too dazzling, too breathtaking! I’ll just photograph him in my memory!

I was checking in at an airline counter when I saw superstar Tony Leung with his entourage arriving at the next counter. For those not familiar with the Hong Kong or Asian movie scene, Tony Leung is arguably the #1 actor in Asia, having won Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival in 2000 and numerous Best Actor awards at various Asian film festivals over the years. Tony Leung was standing talking to a middle-aged woman (his manager or boss?) while his assistants took care of the check-in business. Somehow it was taking longer than usual (ours too), so I could observe him for several minutes. He wasn’t at all bad-looking for a 48-year-old. (He is a star, after all!) He was wearing a white shirt and jeans, with a white knit pullover draped round his shoulders which immediately invited comparison with Jo Hyun-Jae.

JHJ is the best-looking man in a white shirt in the whole world! No “ifs” or “buts”, period! He is a gorgeous walking clothes-hanger! Which got me thinking: With his physical attributes and his considerable acting skills, how come he is not more successful than he is?

It’s not enough just to look good and act well. No man is an island, especially not in the entertainment world. Networking is important — to land the good roles and great scripts — and that’s where management companies come in. Behind every great artist is a well-run, well-oiled managment company. The BIG management companies with several actors on contract of course have a lot of clout — not just in dealing with production companies and TV stations, but also in controlling the fate of their own artists.

JHJ started out with such a big management company but decided to leave (after “Seo Dong Yo”), and he must have good reasons for doing so. Most people follow the money, but I don’t think that was JHJ’s motive. Since then he has been in a medium-sized management company in partnership with Mr. Lee whom he calls “big brother”. At the Korean Fan Meeting in 2008 JHJ specifically thanks Mr. Lee who has “looked after” him for 7 years (now 9.) Since JHJ doesn’t do commercials or TV shows and only wants to be a “pure actor”, it suits him to be in a company which respects his wishes.

I’m just a fan, so it’s not up to me to tell them how to go about their business. But from a commonsense point of view, it defies understanding that after all the hoopla of his discharge, JHJ should then go “underwater” (like a submarine) and is not seen or heard from in 1 1/2 months. I’m not blaming JHJ — I can understand his desire for a little R & R (rest and recreation.) But if I were on JHJ’s team, I’d make sure he stays in the public eye until his first official function — the Japan Fan Meetings in late August. How about some new photos in both the Korean Official Website (KOW) and Japan Official Fan Club (JOFC)? How about some tidbits of news? (And I don’t mean the rehashed and rehashed “misinformation” about JHJ making the rounds of China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, etc. to see his fans. True JHJ fans would wish he’d make drama after movie after drama and won’t have time to go jetting about.) JHJ sporting a new haircut? JHJ getting re-acquainted with his pet dog? JHJ working out in the gym? Anything along these lines will be welcome by JHJ fans who are easily satisfied.

I was commiserating wtih my friend B about the difficulties of running a JHJ website. It’s not just the scarcity of news and the dearth of new photos and videos (discharge materials have been worked to death!) It’s the problem that lately copyright laws are being rigorously enforced. Videos that show clips from JHJ dramas and movies are blocked, and videos set to songs are also banned (because of infringment of copyright.) YOUTUBE has started the process, and others are sure to follow suit. So if you see a black hole where there should be a video, you’ll understand why. B wonders if we have to start writing our own songs. Well, if we are that talented, we’ll be stars ourselves, not fans of a star!

I felt strongly that something had to be done. I’ve wanted to write to SNH on a number of issues but was told it’s “rude” by Korean standards. Now I’m a polite person and I always observe etiquette, but after brooding over it for some time, I decided to act.

I finally wrote a letter to Mr. Lee — in English. I deliberately did not get it translated into Korean. The Korean language has too many polite turns of phrases and the meaning may get lost in the labyrinth. I want to sound deliberate, definite, down-to-earth. I want to get my points across. I ask (politely, of course) if he is aware of the recent developments in the cyberworld re restrictions on use of film clips and songs in videos. I remind him that JHJ websites will be the poorer without such videos. I suggest SNH should fill the vacuum by instructing the official JHJ websites – both the KOW and JOFC – to post more new JHJ photos or, better still, some videos shot exclusively for JHJ fans (doesn’t have to be anything dramatic — JHJ hiking or walking his dog or even shopping would make his fans deliriously happy.) But more important — they should allow such photos and videos to be posted on JHJ websites. (This is prohibited now, which does not prevent some sites from doing so under disguise.) We all want to do our best for JHJ, but they have to give us something to work with. That’s is, short and sweet — not “rude” at all, right?

We are law-abiding citizens and we respect intellectual property. When we post JHJ photos and videos on our websites, we just want more people to get to know JHJ. It is not enough to keep the diehard fans; it is imperative to cultivate new fans. How many times can we re-cycle old stuff? How many times can we re-watch JHJ’s old dramas? (I’m re-watching “Forbidden Love” for the Nth time — still love it!) Till JHJ’s new drama/movie comes out……

But I’ll be watching JHJ on stage (at the Japan fan meetings) in a fortnight’s time! 5555

“3 Dads/1 Mom” is currently showing on TVB HD Channel in Hong Kong

July 30, 2010 Yonhap News (Hong Kong)

Recently in Hong Kong Hallyu (Korean Wave) is again on the rise. Hong Kong’s major TV networks are competing with one another to show Korean dramas. The various media (newspapers and magazines) are also publishing articles on a daily basis on Korean culture, art, cuisine, and travel.

“Oriental Daily” published an article on July 27 and 28 by Chan Man Hung, Head of the China Business Centre of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, in which he evaluates Korean culture and economics.

The title is: “Hallyu rising, supersedes Japan”, and in the article Chan mentions Korean cosmetics have now surpassed those made in Japan and have become a major Korean product.

He says in the past Korean cosmetics are way behind Japanese products, but in the last ten years they have developed by leaps and bounds. On the other hand, Japanese brands have become stagnant. According to Chan, Korean brands develop so rapidly because of creativity.

Korean cosmetics are immensely popular in the Asian market. Myeong-dong in Seoul is the best place for Asian tourists to shop for cosmetics. Chan emphasizes that Korean cosmetics have become major products in Hallyu, along with Korean fashion, skincare products, Korean dramas, and K-POP.

Chan also says that Korean manufacturing industry - whether it is Samsung, Hyundai Motors and other big enterprises or famous brand names – all emphasize creativity and change and integrate with local culture to develop new markets in every part of the world. He also points out Hong Kong should learn from Korea in this respect.

Apart from this, in July alone, Hong Kong and Macau media have published more than 30 articles on Korea, introducing Korean culture, cuisine, shopping, and travel.

According to statistics released by the Korean Consulate in Hong Kong, up to April 2010 the two big TV stations – TVB and ATV – have shown 24 Korean dramas.

inkyoung@yna.co.kr (translated into English by wulijohyunjae)

For the benefit of those who cannot read either the Korean or Chinese subtitles in the video above, the only pertinent things said are:

Jae Hee on JHJ: “Most people think of him as rather inflexible, but actually after a few drinks he opens up and talks a lot and is really interesting. He’s very comfortable to be with.”

Eugene on JHJ: “Not as sharp as I imagined, but comfortable to be with, like the boy next door.”

The one thing that JHJ says towards the end which makes everybody laugh (and which is branded as JHJ type of humour) is: “Short drama scripts are usually produced very slowly.” His remark is in response to what Eugene says about their being kept in the dark about the identity of the father.

JHJ describes “3 Dads/1 Mom” as the kind of drama that you’d like to watch after a hard day at the office, that would make you relax and have a good time.

Is JHJ looking better and better as he gets older and older, or what?

I was exchanging notes with the Master of a major JHJ website who confided she found it harder now running her site than when JHJ was in the army. At least during those two lean years she could use materials about military life, but now those are irrelevant. The Master of another website confidently predicts news of JHJ’s comeback drama will be announced in July and he will visit her country this year. Everybody expects JHJ news will be all over the air once he is discharged, but if they know JHJ at all, they should not be fuelling their own fantasies.

Every day on the KOW I see entries like “Good Morning, JHJ!”, “Signing in”, “Have a good weekend, JHJ!” from the same old people. Of course they have every right to leave such messages — it’s a free-for-all on the KOW. My own habit is: first check FROM HYUNJAE – nothing! (not that I expect anything), then NOTICE (nothing!) and NEWS (if anything, a day later than everybody, and only in Korean), PHOTOS (nothing!), TO HYUNJAE (”Good morning”, etc.), ONLY FAN (”Signing in”, etc.) Original high hopes of KOW are again a figment of our imagination.

And I see all these speculations about JHJ’s comeback drama in practically all websites. One goes as far as writing scripts for him — so many unpublished writers among JHJ fans! What is the point of opining he should be in this drama or that drama? (as if we have any say!) Some people are seriously delusional about their influence. Who knows more about choosing scripts than JHJ and his manager? If there has been no announcement so far, it is because a decision has not been made. Period.

JHJ fans come and go. Someone who has been a fan since 2005 told me she woke up one morning in May and the passion was gone. She could not even work herself up about his discharge. I suspect the girl’s in love! She must have found a boyfriend! I’m sad JHJ has lost a diehard fan, but then I see all these new names on other websites, and even in ours. Well, you win some, you lose some. Good thing most JHJ fans stay forever. (Depends on how you define “forever”!)

P.S. From the Japan Official Fan Club website – Administrator’s message on July 29 (translated from Japanese):

JHJ has started his singing practice in preparation for the Japan Fan Meetings in August. The music director said: “Everything is going very smoothly – JHJ is much better than expected.” In spite of the two-year blank period, JHJ should have no problem picking up where he left off. What will JHJ be singing for us? We’re looking forward with great anticipation!

Joo Ji-Hoon and Lee Jun-Ki starred in a musical in the military when they became entertainment soldiers. Now if our JHJ were to become an entertainment soldier, surely he would be the star of a musical too. But instead he persisted in being a dog soldier! With his looks…..that is something difficult to understand!
