Remember 1st Lieutenant Yoo?

wulijohyunjae | June 6, 2011 | 12:31 am

There is more to JHJ than just Han Kang.  We’re glad his Korean fans on DC are posting other things like this new video of “G.P.506″.  We really wish JHJ could be in another movie, but current Korean movies that are box office hits and also win accolades are very violent (Lee Byung-Hun’s “I saw the devil” is the perfect example.)  So we’re re-visiting JHJ’s 2007 movie which shows him in a very different light from Han Kang.

“G.P.506″- playing soldier

wulijohyunjae | August 7, 2010 | 7:00 am

Excerpts from “G.P.506″, skilfully edited by Nannaya of EVERKorea. Will there be another JHJ movie in the works soon?

Below is the real soldier Sergeant Jo Hyun-Jae at his discharge on June 19:

Here is the complete set of “G.P.506″ posters.  Don’t they make you want to watch the movie again, especially since Sergeant Jo Hyun-Jae will be discharged in a little more than a month?

A real man

wulijohyunjae | April 11, 2010 | 7:00 am

“G.P.506″ premiered in Korea on April 3, 2008.  This video is set to the song “A real man” by the Hong Kong singer George Lam.

Lyrics translated from Chinese (quite appropriate for this movie and JHJ’s role):

Whether you succeed or fail you have to try hard
If you have the will, nothing is ever too late
Who’s been at it while I’m not aware?
Success depends on true ability
Be a real man — shoulder the pain and disappointment.

To take part I have to be willing
Do what you have to do with all your heart
Who tries to confuse enmity with sincerity?
Let actions speak for themselves
This love is mesmerizing – who does not have a sorrowful past?

Be a real man, everyone has to die once
No need to reason, a hero may be a madman after all
Be a red-blooded man, venture forth into the world
Create moving stories with my own two hands
No hesitation in the face of failure or success.

With my whole heart and soul, plunge into the ring of competition
Life is special (life is special)
It can change my life (life can be so meaningful)
Enact a moving story (to remember all my life)
Dedicate my life to uphold justice.

“G.P.506″ press conference

wulijohyunjae | November 27, 2009 | 7:00 am

The press conference to introduce “G.P.506″ took place on March 4, 2008.  These two videos are a feast for the eyes.  Don’t ask us what the Korean says.  Just look at Jo Hyun-Jae for 20 minutes.  (Or watch both videos at the same time, if you don’t understand Korean.)  It will make your day!

I just discovered a requirement for being a movie star (from watching these videos)  — you have to be able to NOT BLINK when flashlights go off before your eyes every other second!  Just the reflection of the flashes hurts my eyes.  I marvel how JHJ could sit there looking so cool.

“G.P.506″: Great Escape

wulijohyunjae | November 23, 2009 | 7:00 am

mcms_as_return_resource

The following article is from ELLE magazine (early 2008):

Jo-Hyun-Jae used to be a gentle man, but there is no doubt that audiences have adjusted to his new image.  Sporting a new crew cut and wearing a military uniform have brought him a lot of attention.  But there are still many new directions where he can turn, and that would require he draws on his considerable acting skills.

JHJ has changed.  His eyes which make women’s hearts pulsate violently now have a new firmness and steadiness.  When he speaks, he still retains the tone of 1st Lieutenant Yoo of “G.P.506″.  He returns to the screen to meet the keen expectations of the public, in a new image and with superb acting.

This movie has an all-male cast, and the story takes place in the military.  It is about the indomitable will to survive, regardless of anything, and it is this that attracts JHJ in the first place.

Because the expectations were so immense, JHJ experienced some pressure at the start of the shooting.  Work on the film was suspended for four months halfway through.  In the 1 1/2 years that he spent on this film, JHJ retained his short hairstyle with a heavy heart.

“Yes, that was a difficult period.  We were lucky to be able to finish the film at all.  The production team and I spent a lot of time waiting.  That we were able to finally complete the project made me very happy.”

mcms_as_return_resource3

He no longer looks like what he did in “G.P.506″.  Publicity for the movie and shooting of a new drama ["3Dads/1Mom"]  are occurring at the same time.  Exhaustion brought on by pressure of work is written all over JHJ’s handsome face.

Even then, his bright eyes are still sparkling.  ”How do you like the movie?” he asks several times of those reporters who have seen it.

When discussing his role in the movie, he instantly becomes the character of 1st Lieutenant Yoo.  “I don’t think I’ll try to escape or evade,” he said. “If it really comes to that, it is up to human beings to change the present situation.  I’m not a smart and intelligent person.  I don’t hold out much hope in this respect.”

His character in the movie constantly vacillates between his perception of the horror of the situation and his intense will to live.  “I tried my best to portray this character — in order to meet the demands of the character.”

In order to sustain his portrayal of the character, during the shooting JHJ tried to maintain a serious, even sombre, look.  He would sit quietly by himself.  The sets were dark and the lighting was dim, so he passed his time in this lonely manner.

As soon as shooting was over, he immediately started exercising.  He would ride his bicycle from his home to XXX (can’t translate name of place) and while away 3 or 4 hours like this.  With his perspiration exudes the tiredness of mind and body which leaves him refreshed.

This is a new beginning for JHJ.  With smiles and laughter he returns to the TV screen — to meet again the audience that he has left behind.

This will be a totally different JHJ.

JHJ is inspired by Al Pacino

wulijohyunjae | September 8, 2009 | 7:00 am

(This article is more than 2 years old, but it has something interesting about Jo Hyun-Jae which might be new to some readers.)

“After seeing Al Pacino, JHJ resolved to challenge a new image.”

GPpressConf1GPpressConference

An unexpected transformation in actor Jo Hyun Jae: “After seeing Al Pacino,I resolved to challenge a new image.” Jo Hyun Jae is attracting the attention of many fans by revealing the pivotal point at which he resolved to challenge a new image. In his recent interview with men’s magazine “V Magazine,” he discussed his present state, alongside a pictorial presentation of the new macho image of the role he is presently filming.Jo Hyun Jae, who is currently in the peak stage of filming, will be appearing in the movie “G.P.506″ which is about a mystery that takes place in the demilitarized zone involving a series of murder. And Jo Hyun Jae’s character will hold the key to unlocking this mystery.

More than anything, deviating from his usual “pure youthful guy” image and playing a role that is a complete contrast is what is drawing the most attention. This time he is transformed quite substantially into a character who emanates a strong sense of masculinity.

Regarding this, Jo Hyun Jae said,”After seeing Al Pacino’s acting, I decided to challenge a similar role. Transcending the traditional boundaries of an actor’s abilities, Al Pacino’s acting is in utter contrast to the traditional image I have lived up to until now. And that is why I decided to challenge this role,” Jo Hyun Jae revealed.

Not only is Jo Hyun Jae’s transformation something to look forward to, but so is the film itself in the world of cinema. The main reason for this is that the film is the second work of director Gong Soo Chang, who gained much recognition for directing the war thriller film “R Point,” starring Kam Woo Sung. The filming of GP506 is already about 80% done and is expected to open around mid-August.*

Jo Hyun Jae, who has recently cast aside his previous image and is anticipating the reaction of his spectators, appears in June’s issue of V Magazine, where he is interviewed and photographed with his new look

(.*Editor’s Note: Filming of “G.P.506″ was halted in mid-2007 and resumed later that year, so the film was not shown until early April 2008.)

"G.P.506" DVD released in Japan

wulijohyunjae | July 4, 2009 | 8:35 pm

The DVD of Jo Hyun-Jae’s movie “G.P.506″ was finally released in Japan on July 3, 2009.

The jacket, which portrays the three main characters, is very different from the Korean version. In the Korean DVD the cover is just a dull grey (no images) which perhaps reflect the sombre nature of the contents.

Those Japanese fans who bought the DVD online would have received their copies already. Now practically all of JHJ’s works (dramas and movies) are available in Japan. His fans there can complete their collection.

FOOTNOTE: “G.P.506″ will be shown on the Korean movie channel OCN on July 5 and July 9 at 10 p.m.

"G.P.506" — the ending

wulijohyunjae | April 20, 2009 | 6:00 am

“G.P.506″ premiered in March 2008 and was shown in Korean cinemas from April 3. It went straight to No.1, did reasonably well at the box office, and was attended by an audience of nearly a million. I bought the DVD when I went to the Korea Fan Meeting in July. The quality is excellent, needless to say, and the English subtitles are very professional. But…..

I don’t like the ending of “G.P.506″. I don’t like the way the Jo Hyun-Jae character dies — like a dog! If I were the director, I wouldn’t let him die. Not because it breaks my heart, but because I have a better ending.

The most horrifying ending of any “horror” movie I’ve seen is that of “The Omen” (the original one, all the sequels cannot live up to it.) The cherubic little boy (son of Satan) is taken in by his uncle, the President of the U.S.A., after he has killed his parents and all who stand in the way (without anyone suspecting, of course.) The final frame shows the boy with the face of an angel turning his head and smiling into the camera. It’s the sweetest smile but it sends shivers down my spine. Imagine the havoc this boy can wreak from the White House!

Now if I were to re-write the ending of “G.P.506″, I would dispense with all the violence. The shoot-out between the infected and the not-yet-infected gets tedious after five minutes. The final BIG BANG is melodramatic and, worse, predictable. If I were the scriptwriter, I would not kill the JHJ character. The unidentified disease has a dormant period during which the affected appears normal. All the others can die, but I would have the JHJ character, the lone survivor, discharged from G.P.506 (because certified OK), then re-deployed to another guard post. My last scene will show the JHJ character reporting for duty, say, at G.P.438. The implications are obvious. The horrific cycle will begin all over again. The JHJ character is the carrier of the unknown “virus” which will spread violence and death in the new camp.

Horror that is depicted has the advantage of visual impact. Everything is shown on the screen and the viewer just accepts what his eyes see. But the most spine-chilling kind of horror is not that which can be seen, but that which can be felt. Suggestion is more potent than outright depiction: stimulating the viewer’s imagination can induce greater horror.

“G.P.506″ has a “closed ending” — we know everything is finished. An “open ending”, on the other hand, opens up possibilities and leaves it up to the viewer’s imagination. I can see the JHJ character as the carrier of the unknown virus inflicting damage and destruction in the new guard post. As long as the “virus” is not identified, the horror cycle can perpetuate forever.

But perhaps this kind of ending is too sophisticated for the average viewer. The narrative method of the movie may already pose a problem for some viewers — the constant flashbacks and flash forwards, the weaving back and forth, the shift in time, truth vs. lies, reality vs. fantasy may have confused some viewers. Most viewers want to know what happened; they do not like to be left dangling in mid-air. They want this thing to be concluded; they do not want it to go on. They want to leave the cinema with certainty, not doubt and confusion.

The movie has been successful in its creation of atmosphere and build-up of suspense. The darkness contributes to the gloom and doom. We follow the investigating officer in his discovery of part and parcel of the truth — the more he knows, the lesss he knows, paradoxically. He is nowhere nearer the truth halfway through the movie than at the beginning. But somewhere along the way (about 2/3 in the course of the movie), I sense a shift in focus. Discovery of the truth is no longer the prime objective; resolution of the problem takes precedence. Hence the final explosion that engulfs everyone and everything.

We know the shooting of this movie was interrupted in mid-2007. It finally got completed with new financial backing. Did the new money come with a mandate to wrap up the project ASAP? Pure speculation on my part. But the shift is easily detectable — the first 2/3 of the movie is more artistic, the last 1/3 pure sensation. The explosive ending is deliberately sensational and perhaps inevitable, but not necessarily a natural outcome of the first part.

“G.P.506″ is an ambitious project, and, as such, I would give it an A- overall. It’s not the best Korean movie on the demilitarized zone that I’ve seen — that would be Lee Byun-Hyun’s “JSA”. Just as the creation of atmosphere is very successful, its characterization of the main players is also convincing. The lead actor, the investigator, is very good in holding the parts together. JHJ’s character is most impressive on his first (delayed) appearance, and this is a breakthrough in acting for Hyun-Jae. He proves he can hold our attention even when his handsome features are covered in dirt. He is no longer the same guy as that in “Love Letter”, “Sunshine”, or “Only You”. He has become 1st Lieutenant Yoo; he is totally in character. My only complaint is: he appears too little, and he sort of fizzles out in the end. I don’t like the way the director/scriptwriter disposes of the JHJ character — seems he doesn’t matter anymore and is just gotten rid of (shot dead.) Someone who would do anything to survive should not die like a dog. This is definitely a flaw, and not because I’m a JHJ fan.

I have one lingering question in my mind after watching “G.P.506″ — Is it worth it for Hyun-Jae to devote one whole year of his life to making this movie?
