On the eve of Jo In-Seong’s discharge (May 4), Korean media published an article today (May 3) about those stars who have served their country as “model soldiers” and those who have tried to shirk their duty [including some big name stars whom we will not mention here.] JHJ is of course a “model soldier”. We have only translated the JHJ part.

“Protecting our country is our duty”– perfect stars

Famous actor Jo Hyun-Jae (31) is the perfect embodiment of the model soldier. He entered the military without any fanfare in August 2008 and served as an ordinary soldier in Pocheon 2nd Battalion 56 Ammunition Unit for two years. He was discharged in June last year and was warmly welcomed back by his fans. He chose the SBS drama “49 Days” as his comeback project.

Mr. K is outed! You may remember we mentioned in our January 23 post “Dear Diary (35)” that there appeared an unusual fan message on TO HYUNJAE in the KOW the day before — from the father of one of JHJ’s army mates. The father used a pseudonym (which is quite unnecessary since he mentioned his son’s full name, so he must be Mr. K Sr.) Anyway he wrote his son served in the army with JHJ and mentioned him several times, obviously favourably. So his parents watched “Seo Dong Yo” and now all members of the family are JHJ fans. Mr. K Sr. knows about JHJ’s new drama and sends good wishes and blessings.

You will not believe the “media frenzy” this message aroused. It is carried in its entirety (in English) and translated into Korean and Chinese on all the JHJ websites that I usually frequent. One fan message has made Mr. K Sr. a celebrity writer! Not only that — the Korean fans (super sleuths!) even searched and discovered who Mr. K Jr. is. He is in both pictures above. Since these were taken during the first five weeks of basic training starting on August 15, 2008, that means Mr. K Jr. met JHJ then. Whether they later served together in the army we do not know, but they must have kept in touch. Now which one do you think is Mr. K Jr.?

JHJ has been discharged from the Korean military for 7 months now, but the following two photos have just surfaced (at least we’ve never seen the first one, and many fans may not have seen the second either.) You see Mr. K Jr. again in the first one. He and JHJ were obviously army buddies, probably still friends from the way Mr. K Sr. wrote.

Still guessing? Stop racking your brains — here’s the answer! But then you’ve already got it, right?

We have not used Mr. K’s full name because we feel his privacy should be protected. Those of you who are KOW members have probably read that message on TO HYUNJAE.

This is a Korean video (probably released by the military) and the commentary and subtitles are in Japanese. You either watch it like a silent movie or you’ll have to trust our interpretation (educated guess.)

This video is the final segment of the 3-video series on the Korean soldier. (First 2 videos are in 2010.4.8 post “The Korean soldier (1)”.) It starts with new recruits graduating after the 5 weeks of basic military training. The graduation ceremony in the hall is formal and solemn. They salute, and salute again. They sing the national anthem of South Korea. They get their stripes (ONE stripe for Private Second Class.) They throw their caps in the air (just like university graduates at outdoor ceremonies.)

Those new PSC interviewed all say it is blood, sweat, and tears. Training is very hard – great physical exertion and mental strain. One mentions the blisters on his feet after trekking in those army boots and how his superior tends to them. Another talks about the night trek which is an unforgettable experience. But they all say it is worth it as they learn responsibility and duty to their country.

The next day they are sent off to different camps all over the country. The real tests and trials are yet to come. The final scenes show part of the training regimen. Fighting!

This video gives you an idea of what Jo Hyun-Jae has gone through. You can visualize him among the graduating class of PSC on September 10, 2008. Did you notice the soldiers only have one rucksack when they are sent off to their respective camps? Where does JHJ keep his fan mail?

When we were in Busan recently, we saw some soldiers on leave. First thing we looked at was: how many stripes on his uniform’s sleeve? We now know: ONE stripe = Private Second Class; TWO stripes = Private First Class; THREE stripes = Corporal; FOUR stripes = Sergeant. Our JHJ is 4 stripes!

Although they do not say so, these videos on the Korean soldier must have been released by the Korean military. This version comes to us from a Japanese source as the commentary and subtitles are in Japanese. You don’t really have to understand Korean or Japanese to get the drift of the contents.

The first video starts by stating military service in Korea is mandatory. Every able-bodied man who enlists must undergo 5 weeks of basic military training which is very tough and strict.

The young recruits are shown saying goodbye to their families and girlfriends. At the initiation ceremony (with the families watching), there are lots of crying and hugging. Then the families leave and the young recruits are on their own.

Still in civilian clothes, they are starting their military service there and then. They collect their military uniforms and put them on, with a senior soldier demonstrating how to do so. Each soldier has a locker (very small) and the “bed” is right underneath the locker. The sleeping conditions are cramped (to say the least) but tidy. The life of discipline has begun.

One young soldier says this is the first time he has left home and he is feeling uneasy. He and the others will have to get used to this unit which is going to be their home for the next 5 weeks.

The second video shows the basic military training the Korean soldiers undergo during the first 5 weeks of their military service. They include: 1) marching; 2) guerilla training; 3) field combat; 4) TNT (grenades/explosives); 5) chemical warfare.

Those interviewed all say the training helps build up self-confidence and maturity. We are in awe when we imagine Jo Hyun-Jae going through all these from August 5 – September 9, 2008 (5 weeks.) No wonder he now looks more manly and even macho.

5 weeks of basic military training in unavoidable. We now understand why so many Korean actors/singers opt to be entertainment soldiers. Two more years of this requires true grit and sheer endurance. JHJ chooses to serve as an ordinary soldier for his entire military service. JHJ, we are so proud of you!

I can only express my agitated feelings this way…..
My eyes are blurred, filled with tears.

Jo Hyun-Jae has finally been promoted to Sergeant!

On that hot and humid day on August 5, 2008, JHJ entered the army as an actor, coupled with the fact that he was older than most recruits – factors that he expressed concerns about.

Watching him, I felt very complicated emotions, but there was nothing I could do.

And yet…..photos released during initial training with his fellow soldiers showed a radiant and smiling JHJ. Also occasional news of him in the army revealed bits and pieces of his life in the military.

Everything seemed normal – the boys were getting on very well together. That’s the answer – good! – a load was taken off my mind.

Actually we will never know how much difficulties he encountered. But at least on the surface he seemed to be doing well, so my worries were unfounded.

And then to become an army dog soldier – he chose the path “not well-travelled”.

Even though he is an actor, he did not opt to be an entertainment soldier.

This young artist not only possesses a sincere face but also an inner resolve and integrity.

I will continue to support him – that’s my decision.

Since he is not an entertainment soldier, he almost disappeared from the radar. There has hardly been any news of him. Waiting is tedious and boring, and nothing can be done.

Time passes…..and now he is Sergeant.

Another 110 days to go…..

All the good times he spent with his juniors, all the unforgettable and beautiful memories…..

Please take good care of your physical health as well as your mental health.

Once more…..

Salute! Sergeant Jo Hyun-Jae! Take care! Let us continue to wait wholeheartedly!

Founded in 1996, Arirang is an international TV network based in Seoul, operated by The Korea International Broadcasting Foundation. As Korea’s premier English-language channel, Arirang TV airs news, cultural programmes, educational shows, documentaries, entertainment shows and more 24 hours a day, in more than 188 countries.

Some of the network’s most popular and longest-running shows include Arirang News, Showbiz Extra, Pops in Seoul, and Heart to Heart. This video of Jo Hyun-Jae’s military life is featured in “Showbix Extra” in a segment called “Showbiz Runway” on January 26, 2010.

The running commentary is a little grating to my ears — first, because the commentator’s English often puts the emphasis on the wrong words, and second, because of the following:

1. JHJ looking “rather handsome” as a soldier — has anyone ever seen a handsomer Korean soldier?

2. JHJ will be promoted to “surgeon” in March — yes, he did say “surgeon”, but of course we know he meant “sergeant”.

3. “Next year he shall be done with his service” — NOT next year, young man! THIS YEAR — June 19, 2010! 2 years are already long enough!

Still, it’s not everyday that anyone gets featured on Arirang, so we’re grateful they did this little piece on JHJ.

Glowing? Glittering? Shiny? Glossy? Sparkling? Gleaming? Shimmering? Dazzling? Take your pick. I don’t know how to translate the headline in the news item which literally translates as “Skin shinier than snow.”

Jo Hyun-Jae’s life in the military is revealed for the first time when Defense Daily posted these photos of the army dog soldier on January 17. Jo Hyun-Jae enlisted in the military in August 2008 and will soon be promoted to Sergeant in March 2010. He is at present serving as an army dog soldier in the Army’s 2nd Battalion Support Command in Gyeonggi-do. He just completed “Severe Cold” training in blizzard conditions earlier this month.

In the photos released by Defense Daily, Jo Hyun-Jae and his German shepherd pose side by side on the snow-covered ground, full of smiles, very attractive, obviously totally acclimatized to life in the army. He looks very fit and smart, and his skin is whiter and more glittering than the snow which makes a deep impression.

Feedback from netizens on the web:

“even in the army his skin still glows”

“so good to see a serving soldier looking so fit in action”

” first actor to be army dog soldier puts in special performance”

Ever since he joined the army, Jo Hyun-Jae has been invited several times to become an entertainment soldier, but he declined because he just wanted to lead the life of an ordinary soldier.

Jo Hyun-Jae’s management company says he does not choose to be an entertainment soldier because he wants to serve alongside ordinary soldiers. He was recommended to be an army dog soldier but he has always liked dogs. Recently he successfully completed guerilla training, followed by “severe cold” training. He will do his best to complete all his military duties before his discharge in June.

Recently the Korean army magazine ARMYZINE published an article about the actor Lee Jin-Wok’s life in the army which aroused great reaction. Lee Jin-Wok is Korean superstar Choi Ji-Woo’s boyfriend; the two met while filming “Air City” (2007).

In an interview on October 30 Lee Jin-Wook, who entered the army on May 6, 2009, revealed what life in the army was like. Recalling the five weeks basic military training (that all new recruits undergo), he said : “That was the toughest, most difficult training I have ever experienced. Thoughts such as “That’s too much!” “I can’t take it anymore” kept flashing through my mind. But once I got through it, I managed to carry on. That made my realize how important my family and friends are to me.” He went on: “Actually I didn’t appreciate the warmth and support of my fans as much as I should. Now that I’m here, I realize I was too narrow-minded and prejudiced. Let me here convey my deepest thanks and gratitude to my fans.”

I was shocked when I saw Lee Jin-Wook’s photo from ARMYZINE (above). He does not look in the least like the young man who rather impressed me in “Air City”. How could six months in the army make him age ten years? He is a year younger than Jo Hyun-Jae, but he looks so old and wrinkly!

Well, the army treats everyone alike, big star or not. Our Jo Hyun-Jae underwent the same basic military training in August 2008. The rare photos that were released always showed a smiling, cheerful JHJ, who was obviously thriving in the army and getting along well with his army mates. Johyunjae.hk put it best: “Like enjoying a belated summer camp.”

To JHJ, after enduring and surviving those grueling months filming “Seo Dong Yeo”, army life is, if not exactly a piece of cake, certainly something he could handle with no problem. Even if he has a problem, he never shows it. That’s our JHJ!

On the evening of Oct.31, the 2009 Army Concert was held in Seoul’s National Memorial Hall. The MC was Jo In-sung (of “A Frozen Flower” fame) who hosted the event together with army broadcast MC Sohn Eun-ah. A number of entertainment soldiers took to the stage to perform.

Some of the celebrities who participated were actors Jae Hee (Three Dads One Mom), Jo In-sung (Frozen Flower), Lee Dong-wook (Partner), Kim Jae-won (Hwang Jini), and Ohn Joo-wan (Chosun Police). On the kpop side, there were singer-actors Yang Dong-geun (I Am Sam), Lee Jung (Hometown of Legends), and Kim Jung-hoon (Goong), as well as singers Sung Shi-kyung and Tony An.

The celebrities who participated in the concert were dressed in the uniform of the service they represent (Army, Navy, Air Force, and the Marines).

Despite rainy weather, there were approximately 7,000 people in the audience for the outdoor concert.

If you can recognize these guys, good for you. If not, who cares? The word “celebrities” is used by our source www.dramabeans.com, and it is most telling.

That’s the difference between being an entertainment soldier and a regular soldier. Our JHJ performs only with his army dog. He is an actor, not an entertainer. And he is currently conscientiously serving his country, patrolling with his dog every morning at 4 a.m. in this freezing weather.

We now know how JHJ can stay so trim and fit in the army — he has a lot of exercise working with his dog everyday.

There is a very touching scene of a soldier sniffling — he’s saying goodbye to his army dog because he’s leaving. Wonder if JHJ will be so sentimental come June 2010.

This part ends with a remarkable scene of an army dog giving birth.

If you’ve read our 9/8/09 post “Latest on JHJ”, you’ll be interested to see these photos (from the Korean military website.) They give you an idea of what Jo Hyun-Jae had to go through on that 4 days/3 nights 40km trek. We have chosen not to post the more graphic photos. You don’t want to see close-ups of feet with blisters, do you?

Regarding the last photo, does that boot really have a hole in it?! Those army boots are very hardy and durable, but apparently they are not up to the task on such a tough trek. According to Defense Daily, each boot weighs between 1.528 to 1.701 kg (depending on the size.)

It breaks our hearts to think that JHJ is subjected to such an arduous trek, but at the same time we are very proud of him. That’s what makes a man a man!

Here are some photos of another battalion on a 5 days/4 nights 220 km trek over mountainous terrain that took place from May 7. Maybe this will be JHJ’s next big test.

After breakfast, it’s another day’s trek at break of dawn. The life of a soldier is really tough!
