It seems like it will really be a huge gamble for JHJ in China.

Ka Ja, everybody wants to do business with China – the greatest market in the world! I am not surprised SNH or JHJ wants to test the waters in China, but I’m a little surprised a Chinese company would invest in JHJ (because he’s not really that well-known here.)

I wonder if the decision was made by JHJ himself with his MC’s blessing. Or was it initiated by his MC and JHJ then decided it might be a good idea to try something new.

Do these MCs even do feasibility studies about their celebrity’s marketability in another country or they just become so gung-ho about the possibility that their celebrity will make it?

No matter how much I rack my brain, it still doesn’t make sense to me. Why China?

prissymom, Jang Hyuk turned down “Secret Garden” to do the Chinese project – a remake of the 2000 MBC hit “All about Eve” (not sure whether he played the Jang Dong Gun or Han Jae Suk role). The Chinese drama bombed and SS was a BIG hit and propelled Hyun Bin to the front ranks of K-actors. Think the Chinese market is that easy to conquer? Think again!

“an actor who is very much in demand at home does not need to go overseas to work” – not true all the time. the names mentioned by wuliJHJ to have worked in Chinese productions previously are in demand stars in SK. Jang Hyuk also comes to mind. He was very much in demand after Chuno but I believe he chose to work on a Chinese project after Chuno.

I think many SKorean actors choose to work on foreign projects mainly to challenge themselves.

FINALLY…news from JHJ..
I’m quite surprised he’s going for a project in China, for my opinion whether he can make it big in China will have to depend on who are his co-stars. But I hope he’s in a movie instead of a drama, drama is just…too long…
Anyway, I’m glad that JHJ is taking on a new experience, I’ll wish him the best for his project;)

Should we not see his next work before judging or second guessing him? Did he not say he doesn’t care if he is the lead or not as long as it’s something that is challenging to him? Let’s wait and see…if it turn out bad, ok he can now say been there done that and move on to the next project…

I agree with jhcwhite. Let’s face it, an actor who is very much in demand at home does not need to go overseas to work. All those “love calls” came to nothing. I’m glad JHJ is finally going to start work again, but he probably won’t be very happy staying a few months in a foreign land whose language and people he doesn’t understand. His last joint venture (Korean/Japanese) “Star’s Echo” wasn’t terribly successful, although I love the way he looks in this short drama. I wish him every success in this new project. But why is there no news report of this?

to be frank, i’m a bit disappointed with the news. Firstly, as wulijhj has pointed out, he’s not going to be the lead (not likely especially a drama about emperor qin shi huang), secondly, he just pushes up his popularity a little more in korea after 49 days, and instead of sustaining or pushing it real up, he’s leaving for china… It’s good that actor gets to work with foreign actors and different crews, great chance to learn new things… it’s just that the timing is not right. I think it’s not the best timing to do that… just my one cent tot..

Actually we heard this on the grapevine last week – rumours swirling. We didn’t want to post anything unconfirmed or unofficial. We knew it’s not going to be a Korean drama because Korean fans didn’t seem overjoyed (“Even though it is not something we expected…..”) A Chinese project was mentioned which we found rather strange since JHJ is not that well-known in China (only “Only You” has been shown on Chinese TV, but of course everybody watches online now.)

Whatever, we hope it’s a movie and not a TV series, prissymom. We’ve watched 3 Chinese movies with big name Korean actors – So Ji Sub, Jun Ji Hyun, Jung Woo Sung – and we’re sorry to say these works don’t do any credit to their CV/resume.

If Mr. M’s info is accurate, jee, in a Chinese historical drama JHJ will definitely not be cast as the lead. The Chinese are very protective and proud of their own. Their actors may not be as good-looking as JHJ (in our biased eyes) but they are mostly graduates of acting academies and are all terrific actors.

Until SNH or the KOW announces anything, we won’t know any details. And they are as usual taking their time. If it is true JHJ is leaving for China today, why do they have to keep his fans in the dark for so long?

I’m so happy to read about him re-appearing via his message to KOW, however, it’s so vague and I feel like all he said was “Hi” then “Bye”. No matter what though, hearing from him made a lot of us very happy. He won’t be that far from you wuliJHJ!

I just hope and pray that no matter what this project of his is going to be, he will find happiness and be a huge success in his new endeavor. I wonder though what made him decide to leave Korea. No offense meant, but I just wonder why he chose to go to China, not Japan. I heard that a lot of Korean celebrities make it in Japan. I WISH JHJ THE VERY VERY BEST!!!

Thank you so much for the English translation, wuliJHJ! So he is going to China to work. But he didn’t mention if it is a movie or a drama, or the title of the project.

Do you think this is a good career move for JHJ? I have heard of so many Korean actors/actresses who appear (are appearing) in Chinese productions, but I have heard of only one who really made a good name for herself in China. I am referring to Jang Nara, and it took her quite a number of years to establish herself in China at the detriment of her career in Korea. Altho she recently made quite a successful comeback to Kdrama recently. Most Korean actors who join Chinese productions disappear for awhile, then they comeback to Kdrama or movie as if nothing happened.

Have you seen other Korean actors in Chinese movie/drama productions? Were they given substantial roles?

Sorry for the questions, I am just excited.
