I was among one of them that was hoping for hk to fall in love with real yk when 49 days just started screening on tv... I was thinking it'll be a fuller story that way too, even now I looked back, i still think so, especially if the scriptwriter wanted so much for jh to die in the drama. Then she could have let her die at episode 10th, failing to get 3 tears (or as she wanted so sadistically, for jh to revive then die 6 days later, whatever way she likes), then another 10 episode on how hk and everyone else gather strength to move on, and hk falling in love with the real yk... and maybe it's the real yk that helps to save the father's company etc...

I can understand LYW fans' feelings, the whole drama was like making use of LYW's body and fullstop. Just like I feel that the whole script has make use of jhj as jhj's innocent eyes make hk character stand out without giving him his deserved screen time.. saving up all the screen time for other characters...

I like mariah's comments "I find the relationship between JHJ and NGR is neither romantic nor tragic, and the ending is …. irritating!" haha so funny yet right to the point! I agree too that the plot about the supposedly DEEP LOVE between HK and JH is just not plausible enough... especially they hardly know each other for the past 10 yrs after a brief and childish encounter for just a couple of weeks?

MC, I like John Cusack too! But I saw one of the worst films ever late last year, and it's his "Shanghai"! I don't care if JHJ only makes one drama a year, just don't do any trash.

hi Wuli,

Thanks for the info. Sometimes being in this business is tough, right?! You will have projects for few months and possible none after. But, good thing JHJ is not high maintenance I suppose. Like here in the US ( you're probably aware of this as well since you always fly here) I've seen artists who gone bankrupt after few years because they think it will continue for so long, the hard truth is if it doesn't rate for few episodes the network will axe it.
I believe with JHJ's talent he will continue to go on, just hope he will be given the chance to do other things when it comes to it , making him more versatile. What I noticed is he is like John Cusack or Edward Norton, John and Edward has these facial features that's keeping them to get matured roles but on the other hand they're brilliant in acting. Perhaps, this happens with him too.
I wish him more before the year ends. He deserves the best. Thanks.

Ruby, i forgot to mention that the sentiments of LYW fans I mentioned are from the English forums I visited.

I think fans of actresses are a different breed from fans of actors. The LYW fans I encountered wanted all the men in 49 Days to fall in love with the real YK, but when it seems that the men are in love or falling in love with YK only because she has JH's soul in her the LYW fans started to become vicious - criticizing NGR's acting, her looks, everything they can think of. Some even wanted YK to commit suicide so that her soul will be with the Scheduler forever because he seems to be the only one who truly loves her.

I wouldn't say that JHJ fans didn't mind that he ended up with nobody. They minded.... a lot! The fans who shipped HK-JH (there are many, so much more than those who shipped LYW-JIW) went up in arms when JH died! The main reason - they were counting on HK having a happy ending with JH! I agree with you that JHJ and LYW look better together, but JHJ has done a great job with his HK character that viewers just wanted HK to have a happy ending with the woman he loves - JH. And when scriptwriter denied the viewers that kind of ending most felt cheated, cursed scriptwriter a lot, said that they are erasing the drama from their computers and from their minds, will not recommend the drama to anyone.

Until now I would come across comments in the English forums how drama watchers have become wary of kdramas because of how 49 Days ended. Some say that they still cannot watch/may not watch the last 2 eps of 49D at all because they were traumatized by the ending (just based on spoilers). Some have stopped watching kdramas as they air, they wait for it to end to find out if anybody dies - if nobody dies, they will watch it, if somebody dies, they steer clear of it.

But there are also those fans of the drama who accepted the ending, but were quite glad that HK and YK didn't end up in a romantic relationship after the 2-year time jump because they felt that that wouldn't be believable, esp. for the HK character. There are also some fans who wanted the time jump to have been longer - say 5 years - to make it more believable for HK and YK to get together.

All in all, only a small fraction felt happy with the ending and with the whole drama. With JHJ fans feeling the most cheated of all for JHJ!

Hi, MC, welcome back! Miss you! Most Korean actors have only one drama a year. Some have two - #2 actors get more work. Some get to work in films or CF (commercials) or theatre (musicals seem to very popular.) We have no idea how they survive for the rest of the year, especially since sometimes they don't get paid for work done. Our JHJ doesn't seem to have any expensive hobbies (golf may be his biggest expenditure), so he should be OK. He managed to support his family during his 2 years military service on his meagre pay of less than US$100 a month, remember? He must have saved up! There's talk during that post-49D celebration dinner that he received several invitations to do CF. Let's hope something materializes out of that talk. In any case, KOW is supposed to announce some good news before the end of this month. We're hoping it's not a lot of hot air.

Well, Ruby, I mind! We are asked to believe JHJ will never look at another woman again after what happened during these 49 days (or is it really 46?) He is supposed to have been in love with this woman for the last 10 years - or is it really a dream, an image? Is he more in love with love than with this woman? I find the relationship between JHJ and NGR is neither romantic nor tragic, and the ending is .... irritating! Maybe Korean fans accept everything shoved down their throats, but I resent being treated like an idiot by the scriptwriter. What she has done, the way she manipulated the ending, is intellectually dishonest - something I cannot forgive!

prissymom, thanks for the explanation. I had no idea there's so much plotting behind. I feel a little sorry for LYW fans. JHJ and LYW do look good together and maybe they should belong together. But JHJ fans don't seem to mind he ended up with nobody.

Hi,
It's quite a while the last time I checked in. I'm happy reading what you wrote wuli. Just wondering though, how many projects do these actors get in a year? And after a drama what do they do for a living? I mean how can they pay mortgages, bills etc.? And 49 Days was only for 2mos.? As I read your Diary it seems that there's nothing going on with the actor after the drama.
Right now, I'm currently watching old Kdramas and a new one also showed in SBS, the one that replaced 49D. It's nice being able to visit again.
Have a wonderful summer.

Ruby, LYW fans are unhappy not because of the amount of LYW's screentime, but because of:

1. LYW did all the hardwork for NGR's character. She's the one who built-up chemistry with JHJ fully expecting that at some point Han Kang will fall in love with the real Yi Kyung. But when it became apparent that HK will not fall in love with the real YK, LYW fans became polarized. There are those who shipped LYW with JHJ until the bitter end, but there are those who decided to shove down the LYW-JIW pairing at everyone's throat even if it was clear that there is no electric/sizzling chemistry between the 2, just a puppy love type of chemistry; and

2. because in the end, even after JH died, YK still didn't end up HK. In the end, HK still has room in his heart only for JH. This kind of ending calls into question LYW's status of being #1 actress.

To put it simply, as some LYW fans put it, they want HK to love YK because she is YK and not because JH is in her body. In short, they wanted HK to love YK body and soul. That didn't happen, so LYW fans are unhappy.

There is no doubt in my mind that "49 days" is a flawed work. They have not been fair to JHJ, that's why I don't feel like watching drama again, except for JHJ parts which as wuliJHJ said earlier are more or less equivalent to "Father and Sons" 10 years ago. Why should LYW fans be unhappy when it's her solo performance from start to finish? JHJ ending up with a tree - that's really funny if it isn't so absurd! If that is scriptwriter's way of getting round #1 actress not getting #1 actor, then she has no artistic integrity!

MinAe920, the Biblical reference is to Joseph's interpretation of the Pharaoh's dream meaning 7 years of plenty followed by 7 years of drought. While 49D was broadcasting, we had loads of material. Now after it ended, we have nothing again. Actually "drought" is normal for a JHJ website. JHJ is so low-key and his management company is so inept it is very difficult to keep our blog going. That's why we're so grateful for all your comments.

7 years of drought..O.O i don't really understand that..keke.. JHJ in a family drama huh, a very good idea! Actually i hope he can play a role similiar like Andrea again but minus the priest and being an orphanXD erm..and plus more macho and gentleman manners haha. As long as not as a second fiddle or a leech for a one-sided love, i found that kind of role very irritating and depressing haha.. Sometimes i wonder who 'forced' him to change his management company, perhaps more of a pity feeling that my two favourite actors not in the same company anymoreXD anyway, I'm happy if JHJ is happy with his company now and will be mad angry if SNH mistreated him! keke.

Ya recently keep on reading about JHJ wants to find his Mrs Right! Honestly I'm super jealous!! haha but of course to some extend, don't worry! After reading this i start googling Yoon Jung Hee-ssi, i think she's one of the rare beauties with distinct elegancy, like Go Hyun-Jung ssi! For now only Soo-Ae is my ideal candidate for Mrs JHJ hahaha!!!
Frankly, i didn't like 49 days much, cos i think its quite simplied and predictable. I couldnt understand how Han Kang accepted so easily about the souls-exchange idea, and confirmed that Ji-Hyun is in Yi-Kyung's body?? Me and my sis thought HK must a real genius to be able to figure it out so quickly! With HK's personality i thought he might look at the medical terms first, bipolar personality disorder etc etc...
ops!! sorry for the looooong replyXD

Ummm I did not know Yoon Jung Hee, is she popular? Director or Writer do not select actor or actress themselves, if they did not send pre-script to JHJ, how does he do? I think, director or writer keep main actor and actress in their heart, right?

jhcwhite,

"the reason for JH and HK’s separation… it’s just a small argument but flared into such dramatic spilling of things and crying…which beside childish, nothing else to describe it… and given that HK’s father is filthy rich, i don’t think it would be difficult to find JH’s contact since her father is also a rich businessman…"

When we are very young, we always handle things in a childish way. This is youth.
In high school, we feel good for somebody but we don't actually know what this feeling is. Besides, we don't know how to handle it. As it is always said. "first love/ puppy love" seldom has good ending.
As we treasure a person very much, we hesitate to face him/her after a long separation as we don't know what will happen.
Eason Chan (陳奕迅) has a song, "Better Not Seen" (不如不見)。

I watched only 1 Yoon Jung hee drama - Love in Heaven. I didn't follow it religiously, I don't think I even finished it. But I do agree about your description of YJH; she has a quiet charm, also very elegant, and she seems to be very modest.

It would be great if JHJ can be in a long drama, more of him to see. It would also be great to see him in a family-oriented drama, but it seems JHJ is bent on going in a different direction. He said in one of his recent interviews that he'd like to be in a drama where he can show his macho side.

Well, whatever his next drama will be I just hope he will be given a chance to show off his great acting talent, and he will be happy with it.

I watched a few episodes of Family Honor when it has repeat screened here in the midnight (watched it during days of insomnia...ha)...and I actually like it... but not sure if the whole drama is really that good, but after reading your dairy, i think i'll go buy the dvd to watch it. I like the female lead too, she is quite similar to jhj i think, often assigned such elegancy role due to her looks... but the way she delivered her characters was movingly touching...

I don't understand why the Baker's Kim was so popular, i find it interesting to watch but definitely not deserving 50% rating, but now I understand, it's the family-thing... now really hope jhj has a family-themed drama which he is the pivotal character like the Baker...

Now that you remind me about 49 days again, yes the one thing i really couldn't stand (beside the ending), is the reason for JH and HK's separation... it's just a small argument but flared into such dramatic spilling of things and crying...which beside childish, nothing else to describe it... and given that HK's father is filthy rich, i don't think it would be difficult to find JH's contact since her father is also a rich businessman...

I watched most of Yoon Jung-Hee's drama, and was moved and cried a lot by her acting. She is one of my favourite actress too. I hope JHJ will have chance to cooperate with her someday.
