jhcwhite, I love reading what you write. Great minds think alike! or is it fools seldom differ? Whatever, we are on the same wavelength. Don't get me started on JHJ's MC! I can write a Ph.D. thesis on WHAT NOT TO DO as a MC. But I have just arrived in Hong Kong and I have to put out a couple of posts first. Will get back to you later, sorry!

the most well-said article about 49 days i've read!!!!! totally, completely agree with what you said!!! as if every word was spoken from my heart!!! thanks wulijohyunjae for speaking our feelings for all who were feeling so agonized about the 49 days... feel so much better than someone feels the same way...

this is the first time i've watched a korean drama whereby the #1 actor got treated like #3 or #4 actor, totally confused the audience who is the main lead, what a joke... Every details about HK was so BRIEFLY touched and gone. Hence it really amazes alot of people how HK managed to captive so many hearts, i'm sure if it's another actor who got this role, HK would be well neglected by the audience with such treament on the character development... I'm really proud to be JYJ's fan.

Surprise ending is welcomed and valued if the unexpected twist is plausible and neccessary and like wulijohyunjae said, "cannot negate everythings that happens in the rest of the drama", Please, everyone can come up with "surprise ending" if it doesn't need to be plausible, and meaningful, it's so easy, just dump all the things you built up previously... Yes i especially hated the overly pretentious ending... end up the writer had to struggled to convince the audience the past 49days was not a joke with the long sermonising speech from JH herself, from HK at river, and again from HK and YK at the trees..., keep repeating that it's ok for JK (AND the audience) to be toyed for the fake 49 days hope, it's ok for audience to be cheated into the emotional rollarcoaster of 49 days, as long as JH still got something out of it blah blah blah.... the writer thinks she can smoke her way out like this?

I also compared it to Seo Dong Yeo's ending when I watched the last ep of 49days, why I felt so sad yet completely satisfied though it's also a devastating ending with the Queen's death, as compared to JH's death in 49 days? the anwer is obvious, what audience asked for is not much really... yet we are not stupid too... that goes to show the ability and talent of writer from Seo dong Yeo and 49 days are of DIFFERENT LEVEL.

It feels so great that someone feels the same way about the treatment of HK's griefing during the real final dealth of JH... i was like "urhh...it's over? just like this?", while we have so many lengthy scenes about the griefing of YK for YS, even after YS meet YK after 5 yrs.. I know nothing about the new JHJ's MC company, is it really small? why did he leave the previous one? I hope he is happy with the new company, maybe he chosed a small one so that they'll focus more on him?

I just got off work and I decided to write down my 2 cents worth of opinion but somehow I cut myself off. I will try to summarize again.
I am in total agreement with what you have stated in this diary.
But I just want to correct my statement when I said 49D gave JHJ a chance to shine by the following statement:
1. He was able to wear fashionable clothing to show how handsome he can look in any attire. I cannot believe he has maintained his aura and charisma.
2. He was able to exhibit his singing talent and I must say his voice improved a lot.
3. With every scene he has I must say he did it in perfection. Showing his natural born acting talent. What more if he was allowed to have more scenes like the scheduler.
I am sure JHJ will have more offers and I hope the story would revolve around his character like in SDY and OY.

"All that banal sermonising about “living every day as if it were 49 days” and “life goes on” is so superficial (and not even novel) that it’s downright laughable. People watch K-dramas for entertainment, not to be preached at. We have priests for that!"

So true! In fact, yesterday when I went to church, during the sermon the priest said something about "live life to the fullest" - I wondered if my parish priest watched 49 Days too that's why he focused on that ....

The people behind 49D didn't realize the treasure they had in JHJ, well it is their big loss. If they only allowed him to shine the way PD Lee Byung Hun did in SDY, then they could have had the high ratings they wanted. I hope other stations/production companies/scriptwriters/directors have seen it and give him the chance to act his heart out in his next project (hopefully another drama within the year).

But if I keep on thinking about the treatment JHJ received in this drama I will just go crazy, so from now on I will just concentrate on these 4 things:

1. Han Kang fever is on! - and will keep on going as the drama is shown in more countries

2. JHJ's star is shining brighter than it ever did before!

3. JHJ's Song topping the charts and becoming the most popular song in the OST

4. Coffee's Cut - will work on this.... I have no reason to watch the other parts of the drama as they don't interest me at all.... only want to watch JHJ, after all I am, first and foremost, a JHJ fan.

JHJ, fighting!

Thank you so much for sharing your feeling. Since I don't know how to express my complicated feeling about 49days in English, but it seems that I am not alone. I have no intention to watch 49days either. It's not because of the unreasonable and sad ending, but the role of Han Kang is not fully developed. Agree with wulijhj, the bonus we got from 49days is JHJ's song. ^_^
