Just like you said, he was smart, intelligent and human. When he was in Taehaksa, he worked his way up and gained the respect of others. But he was ill-fated, and he wouldn't take the path Jang took, ie face his destiny even it was really hard. Their different views of live really set them apart. <br />I couldn't hate the character, either. Other than the reason mentioned before, it was because this sadness in the actor's eyes that made me believe Giroo had silently suffered enough.
